Digital Projection Launch Event

Monday 21st of October 2013 09:31:00 AM

Digital Cinema launches at FLIX, an independent student run cinema in Loughborough.

FLIX, a student run cinema based in the Cope Auditorium off Epinal Way in Loughborough is celebrating after a yearlong super hero fund raising effort with the help of Loughborough Student Union, Loughborough University Alumni Association, EDEN Flix (sponsored by the Centre for Engineering and Design Education), Flix volunteers and the support from Flix film patrons across the campus and community to raise funding for a new state of the art digital cinema projector.

Flix student Cinema is one of the oldest student run societies at Loughborough University and has just upgraded from 35mm celluloid film presentation to Digital projection. This launch is a major turning point in the society’s history in which the society started out with 8mm & 16mm film performances when it was founded in 1946. The launch film will mark Flix continuing its long tradition of bringing an affordable Cinema experience to the University student body and the surrounding local community.

Flix has replaced its ageing Cinemeccanica Victoria 5 (affectionately known by the projection team as ‘Vicky’) with a state of the art Barco DP2K-10Sx digital projector along with a Doremi ShowVault cinema server required for showing DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) compliant films. Flix has also taken the time to upgrade the sound experience from Dolby Digital 5.1 to 7.1 surround sound with the help of a Dolby CP750 cinema sound processor. Flix has the capability to cater for the sight and hearing impaired with audio description with the assistance of a WIR Tx925 (Williams sound Stereo IR transmitter) and an induction loop.

Flix Student Cinema has won its fair share of awards over the years including Society of the year two years running 2008-2009 & 2009-2010 and coming runner up as the NUS (National Union of Students) Society of the year 2010 on our first attempt.

Amongst the attendees were The Mayor of Loughborough, Nicky Morgan (MP for Loughborough), Professor Robert Allison (Vice Chancellor of Loughborough University), Josh Hurrell (Student Union President) and his Executive team.

Nicky Morgan MP for Loughborough said "I would thoroughly recommend the Flix Loughborough Student Cinema experience – great surround sound and the low prices will certainly benefit the whole community."

Robert Allison Vice Chancellor for Loughborough University said "I congratulate Flix Student Cinema on their transition to the digital world. The University, in partnership with the Students' Union, provides a wide range of opportunities that contribute to the Loughborough student experience. I am delighted that Flix Student Cinema is part of the this and congratulate its members on their success."

The film programme is not just open to students and members of the FLIX society, members of the public are welcomed every week to view films on the 28ft screen – the biggest useable film screen in the town. In the upcoming months as well as other social events Flix hopes to draw people’s attention to the cinema as a place anyone can spend an enjoyable and inexpensive evening out. Entrance to the cinema is just £1.50 for FLIX members, Platinum card holders and £3 to everyone else on Sundays, with free screenings of international films on Thursdays. More details can be found on the FLIX website www.flix.org.uk or on the FLIX Facebook age http://www.facebook.com/FlixCinema

New Partnership with Eden Flix

Tuesday 30th of July 2013 09:17:00 PM

Flix is proud to announce a new partnership with EDEN FLIX thanks to the upcoming Digital projection systems that will allow for greater expansion into documentary films.

EDEN FLIX is a recent development to the film scene at Loughborough University, introduced in the previous academic year by the Centre for Engineering and Design Education (CEDE) to provide free screenings of inspirational and thought provoking documentaries related to engineering and design disciplines. The initiative constitutes as part of the Engineering and Design Educators Network (EDEN) series of events.

The films that EDEN FLIX promote challenge our fundamental beliefs and ideas about the world we live in, taking us out of our comfort zones to expose controversies and current or imminent crises, suggesting new methodologies and inspiration for future developments. Themes covered last term included investigations into our relationship with our fuel and food sources, and how technology is playing an ever increasing role in our lives and its impacts on our species. Each screening intends to inform our students of relevant worldly issues that they may have to address to inspire them to push their research to the next level.

With the help of Flix’s new Digital projection systems and a donation from EDEN FLIX towards our fundraising needs, we have a great opportunity to work together and expand our horizons for the benefit of all students based within Loughborough.

“CEDE are delighted to be collaborating with Flix to expand our EDEN FLIX initiative, allowing us to share our messages with a much wider audience. We look forward to seeing our documentary films through the state-of-the-art digital projection system in the fantastic facilities of the Cope Auditorium, which I’m certain, will add to the experience.” – Jonathan Attenborough, CEDE.

Look out for more information on our website, Facebook and Twitter for all the latest information about EDEN FLIX and their films for the next academic year.

FLIX, The student run cinema based in the Cope Auditorium off Epinal Way  in Loughborough is celebrating after a sell out crowd gathered to watch their two screenings of superhero epic ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ starring Christian Bale as the caped crusader Batman.

Over 300 people attended the two screenings of the Chris Nolan directed epic which serves as the finale for his trilogy of Dark Knight Films. The production has so far grossed over $1 billion during its initial theatrical release and was a welcome addition to the roster of blockbusters and international films that FLIX offers its patrons on a bi-weekly basis.

Amongst the attendees were members of the university’s society’s federation including president Sophie Sanders who assisted the team in selling tickets and confectionary to the crowds. The Societies and federations president continued to praise the FLIX team saying ‘I must congratulate everyone involved as they worked extremely hard for the pleasure of the viewing audience and I hope they are giving themselves a well-deserved pat on the back for all their selfless hard work’ The FLIX team are now busy working towards future screenings which include ‘Ted’, ‘The Bourne Legacy’ and ‘Brave’ in the upcoming months as well as other social events which hope to draw more people’s attention to the cinema as a place anyone can spend an enjoyable and inexpensive evening out.
